I hold a BFA in drawing and painting from SUNY Albany, and have been producing art glass since 1982. My main area of focus in painting was in figurative and representational work, approaching photographic realism. I continue to explore those subjects and others in my work with glass to this day. To that end, I have developed a unique process for incorporating imagery into thick panels of fused glass. In addition to fused and stained glass, I have begun a series of 3-dimensional figurative sculptures cast in lead crystal, and have produced a series of very thick textured table pieces for the interior design market.
I came to San Francisco in 1985 to apprentice with Narcissus Quagliata. He quickly made me aware of the vast potential within glass to be used for much more personal forms of imagery. Soon after, I was invited to established a studio in San Juan Puerto Rico where I worked for 18 months on various art glass installations for Interior Designer Jorge Rossello. In 1989, I returned to California to form a partnership with Gordon Huether at Architectural Glass Design, located in Napa CA.
Architectural Glass Design hosted a workshop in 1991 by Johannes Schreiter. The iconoclastic glass artist from Germany was also quick to make his impression on me. Though our work differs greatly, his commitment to producing objects of art which transform the viewer affected me greatly. I am hopeful that all my work can achieve a power and presence which will delight if not transform the beholder as well.
In 1995, I returned to the bay area to find a studio of my own where I could better focus on the process of making art, and of discovering my full potential as an artist. This took a few years, but in 2000, I established Creative Art Glass, and have been working at this location, owned by my good friend and fellow artist, David Ruth, since.
In addition to my own work, I provide installation and studio services for Derix Art Glass Consultants when call
